On December 16, Wayne Rooney, a famous English football star, was arrested on charges
of drunkenness in public and detained in Lawton County Adult Detention Center in Lisburg, Virginia, before being released on personal guarantee.
The Metropolitan Airport Authority (MWAA) in Washington, which operates Reagan National Airport
and Dulles International Airport, arrested Rooney, CNN said on Tuesday. According to Claggett
Rocksell, Lawton County Media Relations and Communication Manager, Rooney was released on a personal guarantee.
According to the court’s online information, Rooney was accused of “public curse or drunkenness”, a misdemeanor under Virginia law.
CNN said Rooney was one of the most popular players in British football and played for England at the World Cup in 2006, 2010 and 2014. He
has the record of scoring the most goals for England and Premier League club Manchester United and has
helped the club win five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup.
CNN also said it was not the first time Rooney had been arrested on alcohol-related charges. In September 2017, he admitted to drunk driving and was banned from driving for two years.
At the time, Rooney said in a statement: “I want to apologize to the public for making unforgivable misjudgments while driving. That’s totally wrong.”
